Why Do I Worry So Much About the Future? (And How to Bring Yourself Back to the Present)

If you struggle with worry, you may notice that your mind spends a lot of time living in the future.

"What if this happens?"

"What if I fail?"

"What if something goes wrong?"

Many people assume they're simply "wired this way." But another way to think about worry is that it can become a really well-practiced mental habit.

Over time, worry and overthinking can begin to feed off each other. The more your mind rehearses future possibilities, the easier it becomes to get caught in the same mental loops.

The encouraging part is that habits can change.

One of the first skills I teach is learning to notice where your attention is in time.

I call it the Past, Present, Future Game.

It's simple.

Instead of getting caught up in what you're thinking about, gently ask yourself:

  • Is my attention in the past?

  • Is my attention in the future?

  • Or is it here, in this moment?

This isn't about forcing yourself to stop worrying. It's about becoming aware of where your attention has gone.

Here's the interesting part:

The moment you notice, "My attention is in the future," you've already shifted.

You're back in the present because you're observing what your mind is doing instead of being completely swept away by it.

I like to think of it as a tiny bit of time travel.

A moment ago, your attention was living in tomorrow.

Now, it's back in today.

And that's important because The present moment is the only place where you can make your next move. You can't make a choice in yesterday, and you can't make a choice in tomorrow. You can only choose your next move from here.

Try This:

For the next week, set two gentle reminders on your phone each day.

When one goes off, don't try to change anything.

Just pause for a few seconds and ask yourself:

Where is my attention right before I got the reminder?

  • Past?

  • Present?

  • Future?

That's it.

No judgment.

No trying to fix yourself.

Just notice.

You may be surprised by what you discover.

Awareness is often the first step toward change. Every time you notice where your attention has wandered, you're strengthening your ability to return to the present moment—the only place where you can make your next move.

Where Do You Go From Here?

If you try the Past, Present, Future Game, you may discover something important.

Noticing where your attention is can be surprisingly simple.

Changing course when your mind keeps pulling you back into worry is often the harder part.

That's where the Create the Win System™ comes in.

I teach practical tools informed by neuroscience and behavioral science to help people notice what's happening, return to the present moment, and make their next move with greater intention.

Because in the end, it's not enough to notice what's happening. You need a way to make your next move.

If you'd like to learn more about working together or explore additional tools, I'd love to help.
